According to a leaked slide on VR Zone, courtesy of our old friend Lars G. Nilsson, the share of AM3 socket Athlon II and Phenom II processors in AMD’s total shipments will be halved in Q3. The trend will continue in Q4, with A-Series APUs taking over, and the good old AM3 Athlon II will be no more by the first quarter of 2012.
FX Series processors on the AM3+ platform will replace Phenom II AM3 processors as early as Q3. Interestingly the share of processors in Q1 2012 will be somewhat higher than the share of Phenom II parts in Q1 2011. As for E-series BGA packaged processors, their share has already increased at the expense of Athlon II parts and it will continue to grow until Q4 2011, when it is set to stabilize. Towards the end of the year AMD will start phasing out the first E-series Brazos parts, introduced in December 2010.
So, by Q1 2012 AMD will phase out AM3 processors completely and it will rely on three platforms and sockets: FX-, A- and E-series. This is AMD’s holy trinity for 2012.
