For those who came in late, the AMD FSR 3 represents the latest iteration of AMD’s open upscaling technology, incorporating advanced frame generation technology for significant framerate boosts in supported games and introducing a new "Native AA" quality mode for improved image quality. This technology is compatible with a broad spectrum of graphics cards, including those from AMD and other manufacturers.
Subsequent to the debut of AMD FSR 3 and the initial two supported games, Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum, AMD made the source code available to developers on GPUOpen in December 2023. This release included updates that introduced support for variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies such as AMD FreeSync, alongside enhancements to FSR 3 frame pacing, culminating in a smoother gaming experience when frame generation is activated. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was the first game to launch with this refined version of FSR 3.
From the onset of 2024, AMD has observed a swift surge in the uptake of AMD FSR 3 within the gaming industry, with an array of remarkable titles being launched or updated to include FSR 3, such as Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Starfield, The Last of Us Part I, among others. As of March 20, 2024, there are 40 available and forthcoming FSR 3 games, all within the first half-year following its release. Unveiled at the GDC 2024 during the "High-Performance Rendering in Snowdrop Using AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3)" presentation, AMD claims its FSR 3.1 is set to bring notable improvements, new features, and updates including enhanced temporal stability when stationary and in motion, reducing flickering, shimmering, and "fizziness" around moving objects and diminished ghosting and improved detail retention.
Support for Vulkan and the Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK) is also included. AMD FSR 3.1 will be accessible to developers on GPUOpen in Q2 and is expected to be integrated into games later in the year.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, developed by Insomniac Games, Nixxes Software, and Sony Interactive Entertainment, is slated to be the first game to incorporate AMD FSR 3.1. The forthcoming game update will introduce all the benefits of FSR 3.1, such as the separation of frame generation from upscaling, enabling its use with other upscaling methods supported by the game, and enhancements to the FSR temporal upscaling image quality.
