AMD targets NV GM107

AMD is planning to take on Nvidia’s Maxwell-based GM107 GPU with a new mid-range chip this summer. The new chip, codenamed Tonga, is supposed to go after the GTX 750, GTX 750 Ti or even the GTX 760. Details remain sketchy, but the new part could be a direct replacement to venerable Tahiti Pro products.

However, since Tahiti was originally a big, high-end design, Tonga should end up much smaller and a lot more efficient. According to VR Zone, Tonga should launch this August. The rumoured spec points to 2048 GCN 2.0 cores, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs and a 256-bit memory bus. The card is expected to appear in two flavours, with 2GB and 4GB of GDDR5 memory.

Nvidia’s first discrete cards based on Maxwell launched earlier this year, offering enough performance for 1080p gaming and exceptional efficiency. Tonga is supposed to address the power gap and deliver superior power efficiency when compared to existing Tahiti Pro products.
