Mali-450 MP8 GPU tips up in Chinese chip

4K support, 45 GFLOPS

The latest ARM GPU has tipped up in the unlikeliest of places, a quad-core SoC designed by Chinese outfit Amlogic.

Amlogic’s AML8726-M8 features four A9 cores clocked at 2GHz. It is built using TSMC’s 28nm process and it features the new Mali-450 MP8 GPU, an eight-core affair capable of churning out 45 GFLOPS. The GPU is said to feature a fill rate of 3000Mpix/s, although ARM’s spec sheet says it is actually 2000Mpix/s.

The GPU supports 4K video and Ultra HD decoding, along with 1080p H.264 encoding and a bunch of other technologies. The Mali-450 is also available in six-core flavour, as the Mali-450 MP6, with an estimated 25 percent less performance.
