According to a new report, Nvidia is eyeing up the laptop and AI markets as it gears up to take on its rivals with a PC CPU lineup in 2025 that could blow Intel and AMD out of the water.
DigiTimes claims that Nvidia is working on a new CPU based on Arm technology—a familiar platform if you’ve used a Nintendo Switch, as its Tegra chip is Nvidia-made.
But bringing Arm into the PC world is a different story—something that has had mixed success. Without an x86 license, Nvidia could have a significant hurdle to clear to make its CPUs fully compatible with the existing PC game library.
Arm CEO Rene Haas has pointed out that Qualcomm’s exclusive right to make Windows-compatible Arm chips ends in 2024, which means Nvidia’s new Arm-based CPU might be able to run Windows soon enough. Qualcomm is rumoured to be in talks with Intel to get its own x86 license.
According to DigiTimes, Nvidia could announce its PC CPUs as early as September 2025, with a full launch potentially following in March 2026. Much depends on whether the outfit can get games to work on the thing.
The real focus for these new CPUs, if Nvidia’s plans come to fruition, is likely to be in AI and laptop technology. Nvidia dominates the AI world, so it’s no surprise they’d want to expand on that. And for laptops, Arm CPUs can provide great power efficiency, which could give Nvidia an edge.
