by on08 October 2024

Entry-level gets a boost with Exynos 1330 or Dimensity 6300

Samsung has officially announced its new Galaxy A16 5G budget smartphone, bringing a larger 6.7-inch screen, Exynos 1330 or Dimensity 6300 SoC, and up to 6 major Android upgrades, which is a rather big surprise.

The new Samsung Galaxy A16 5G got bigger but also thinner, measuring 164.4x77.9x7.9mm and weighing 200g. It still uses plastic back and a plastic frame, but Samsung managed to keep the same weight and make it thinner than the Galaxy A15 5G predecessor. It also has IP54 dust and splash resistance. The phone features a larger 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, but Samsung still kept a 90Hz refresh rate.

The SoC also got an upgrade from Dimensity 6100+, and the Galaxy A16 5G will feature Exynos 1330 in Europe and MediaTek's Dimensity 6300 SoC in other markets like India. The Exynos 1330 is an octa-core 5nm SoC with dual Cortex-A78 and six Cortex-A55 cluster, and Mali-G68 MP2 GPU. The Dimensity 6300 is also an octa-core SoC made at 6nm, features dual Cortex-A76 and six Cortex-A55 cores, and somewhat less powerful Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. The Europe version will feature 4GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. The Galaxy A16 5G with Dimensity SoC will get 4GB, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of storage.

The camera system remained pretty much the same, with a 50MP main sensor, 5MP ultrawide, and 2MP macro sensors, as well as the same 13MP f/2.0 front camera. It has the same sensors, lacks a 3.5mm jack, and comes with the same 5000mAh battery with 25W wired charging.

The biggest surprise is the fact that Samsung is now promising 6 major Android updates, which is a big improvement compared to 3 major updates on the Galaxy A15 5G. It will launch on Android 14 with One UI 6.1.

The price is set at around €250 for the base version, at least in Europe.
