Vole's Windows 11 update steals 8.63GB of hard drive

Mouse missing presumed fed

Microsoft, the software king of the world, seems to be having some major problems with the latest update for Windows 11.

Users have reported blue screen crashes related to gaming and Intel drivers, and mouse cursors disappearing.

However, the major Windows 11 24H2 update also creates a 8.63GB cache folder during installation that can’t be deleted.

Windows always creates a big cache when installing updates, so the thing's size is not the issue. The problem is that the cache can’t be removed after applying the update.

In fact, once it is installed, it seems as hard to get rid of as Prince Andrew. Attempts to delete the cache via the Control Panel are unsuccessful. Selecting the cache for deletion and initiating the process doesn’t work. Various other methods to remove the update cache failed, too, it only goes away after a clean Windows installation.

Vole  is aware of the bug and is apparently working to fix it in the meantime you are running a risk using the update.

This is a pity as this update includes some useful new features, including under-the-hood performance and security improvements, new surface-level features, and quality-of-life updates. Such improvements include a new emulation layer for x86 Arm PC apps, better gaming performance on specific GPUs and CPUs, and more.

The 2024 Update also includes a newly redesigned context menu in File Explorer that places the most common actions in labelled boxes along the top of the menu. This update also introduces the ability to create 7zip and TAR archive files directly from within File Explorer without downloading a third-party app.

Users can see their Android phone's file system directly in File Explorer, there is a new Outlook app for email, calendar, and contact. Vole has updated Copilot as a standalone web app and Photos now includes AI-enhanced generative erase and background editing.

Windows Update now supports checkpoints and hot patching for faster and less obtrusive updates and Voice Clarity uses AI to remove background noise picked up by your microphone in supported apps
