While more details will be available at the 2022 IEEE Symposium on VLSI Technology and Circuits, Intel did reveal some tidbits, more precisely its Intel 4 manufacturing process (previously known as the 7nm). Products based on Intel 4 will be available as of next year and include its Meteor Lake consumer and Granite Rapids server chips.

According to Intel, the new Intel 4 will bring 20 percent improvement in performance-per-Watt.

Ben Sell, Intel's VP, and Director of Specialized Technologies said that Intel 4 is on track and doing quite well, giving about 21.5 percent in performance improvement, reaching the same frequency level while using about 40 percent less power.

"The progress on Intel 4, it's very positive. It's right where we want to be," said Ben Sell.

The improvements to the manufacturing process and a modular approach with tiles should bring significant improvements as well as allow Intel to take a different approach.

"The main thing that we're doing now is we're going into a much more modular development approach, which means rather than having one giant step, you have a few smaller steps and a few modules in the process that you can develop separately. This makes it a lot easier to get each module developed in time, without the complexity of having everything else solved to understand this module", Sell added.
