Microsoft will not help impatient Phone 7 users

Software giant Microsoft has said it will not help Windows Phone users who updated their smartphones last month with an unsanctioned tool and now can't apply a security update. Users who could not wait for Vole to ungrade their phones used the ChevronWP7 Updater written by a bloke called Chris Walsh.

The software worked well until Vole released a security patch which Chevron users could not run. Microsoft said it was working with Chris Walsh to make sure a workaround he created will do the trick. However Brandon Watson, senior director with the Windows Phone team, informed customers that Microsoftwould not directly assist anyone who had run Walsh's tool last month.

He said at the time phones which were updated via this method were not going to be able to update past build 7390. He said that while he was not ruling out having a fix in the future, for now there is no fix. Microsoft had warned users this might happen, so now they would have to lump it. Watson said that anyone who had used ChevronWP7.Updater would not be able to update past NoDo, and would not be able to retrieve and install thesecurity update Microsoft shipped Tuesday.

Walsh's own fix is waiting for validation from Microsoft. Watson said that Walsh  believed he had created a way to get these phones back on the officially supported path. We will work with them to validate their solution and applaud them for taking responsibility to do this.
