Chipzilla's Arrow Lake sales flop

by on31 October 2024

It seems AMD is not the only one with issues

Chipzilla's latest Core Ultra 200S series desktop processors, codenamed Arrow Lake, are facing a monumental flop.

Despite their release on October 24, not a single unit has sold on Mindfactory, Germany's most significant PC components online retailer.

While some Arrow Lake chips have managed to sell out on American sites like Newegg and Amazon, Intel's CPU sales on Mindfactory are dismal, making up just five percent of the site's CPU share. Meanwhile, AMD is raking in a staggering 95 percent of CPU sales despite its similarly disappointing Zen 5 series launch.

A Tweet displaying Mindfactory's CPU sales numbers for the past week paints a bleak picture for Intel. The tweet, spotted by Tom's Hardware, show that none of the five Arrow Lake desktop SKUs—Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K/KF, or Core Ultra 5 245K/KF—appear on the chart.

Intel's highest-performing CPU, the Core i5-13400, languishes in 21st place behind a wall of Ryzen chips. A trio of 14th Gen Core i7s and Core i9s are trailing, with all of Intel's processors selling around ten units each.

Intel's approximately 40 sales at an average sale price of €388 each represent 5.19 per cent of Mindfactory's CPU sales. In stark contrast, AMD's top-selling chips, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 7 5700X3D, sold 190 and 80 units respectively. AMD's motherboard sales share also surged from 88.65 per cent to 93.75 per cent, effectively knocking Intel out of the water.

The Intel Core Ultra 9 285K was seen as fairly decent but was a generational regression in gaming performance. Its productivity increases weren't enough to save it from being considered a disappointing launch, and Germany's sales reflect this sentiment.

The 285K is out of stock at most American retailers, which do not seem to have bothered stocking up on new inventory. The next-best chip, the Core Ultra 7 265K, remains in stock on Amazon and Newegg but has garnered only six combined reviews, indicating lacklustre sales.

Arrow Lake's underwhelming launch is troubling news for struggling Intel. During its August earnings call, the company revealed a loss of $1.6 billion in one financial quarter. In response, Intel has slashed staff by 15 percent and scaled back ongoing fab construction efforts.
